When it comes to winter in Michigan, working smarter and being prepared can help your business save energy when the weather turns. There are also a number of energy solutions that range from inexpensive and easy to install to more complicated and a bigger investment. Whatever your stage or budget, there’s an energy solution to help your business be ready for colder weather this year.

  1. Weather stripping – Sure, this is low-tech. But it’s also affordable and extremely effective. Take the time to make sure all your windows and doors are sealed off to keep out the drafts. This not only helps maintain temperature and reduces energy usage, but it also keeps everyone inside more comfortable. We love those co-benefits! Here are some tips for installing the weather stripping effectively.
  2. Programmable thermostats – Thanks to technology, there are a number of programmable thermostats on the market. From the newest ones that can be controlled from an app on your phone to the tried and true older versions that allow you to adjust the temperature based on time of day and day of the week, you’ll be able to find something for your needs and budget. Additionally, it may be worth the investment to have separate thermostats for different areas in your facility. For example, if you have a retail space, warehouse space, and/or an office area, they may be occupied at different times or need to be more comfortable based on who’s coming in and out.
  3. Destratification fans – Not only are destratification fans extremely efficient at reducing energy use and cost, they increase the comfort of any facility. They are an investment and will take some planning for most budgets and to be installed, but most users will say they’re worth the effort. We’ve worked with a number of organizations who have installed destratification fans, and the difference in both hot and cold weather is worth noting.

These are just three energy solutions for your Michigan business, and not even close to an exhaustive list. We’d recommend taking a look at our last post for more ideas on preparing your facility for winter weather.
